The Ethnographers

One day last year my best friend asked me "do you ever just feel like a participant observer? Like everyone around you is part of a whack-ass culture and you're just sitting back to watch?" "Every day," I replied.

Yesterday over my lunch break I was scanning a really dull text on the I-Ching for a segment I could write up for a class assignment for my Eastern Religious Texts course.  I came across the use of the I-Ching in psychology and highlighted Jung’s opinion that the I-Ching was a great means of cultivating synchronicity.  He defined synchronicity as “a coincidence of events in space and time… [that means] something more than mere chance, namely, a peculiar interdependence of objective events among themselves as well as the subjective (psychic) states of the observer or observers.”

As we were driving home from Thanksgiving in Delaware, I saw a Subaru Outback covered in bumper stickers.  One of them had tiny white letters on a black background reading “Got Adam Ant?”  I suppose I just read it aloud and didn’t tell Courtney that it was from a bumper sticker.

Last night after another great episode of Friday Night Lights, I turned to Courtney and asked “”Got Adam Ant?”  What does it mean?’

He looked at me blankly.  ”I don’t know, you made it up.”

“No, it was a bumper sticker!”  I explained, then got up to look it up on the internet.

Courtney’s desktop has this weird default search engine and I always forget to click over to plain old Google.  The results are always peculiar and annoying, or they were until last night.  Thanks to that weird default search engine, my first result for the query “got adam ant” was a link to his upcoming show in Norfolk on February 13th.

In closing, yay Dr. Jung!  Yay Adam Ant!  Yay synchronicity!  And yay fun Valentines day trip to the beach!  There may be a bed and breakfast with bicycles in our future!
